Back to the Cemetery

Cemetery (Pacific Grove) - Monterey County  2023

Finished with mission photos, I drove back to Highway 1, turned left and drove a short way north to the Pacific Grove exit. I followed the road down to Asilomar and managed to make my way to the cemetery, this time without GPS assistance.

"El Carmelo Cemetery has been part of Pacific Grove's history since the 1800s. For nearly two centuries the City has maintained and cherished this final resting place. The oldest section of the cemetery has wooden markers and upright monuments located amidst stately pines and cypresses. The more recent sections are park-like settings with engraved markers placed flush with the grass."

I was in luck, as the morning's fog was still in evidence. Kind of like when I first took photos here in 1987.

Hakone Cemetery

Cemetery Steps (Hakone) - Japan  2023

Cemetery, Fog (Hakone) - Japan  2023

Photos of cemeteries are scattered throughout the blog. This one was located on the road that went from the ryokan to the main street of the town.

I'm thinking that the earliest photo I took of a cemetery in Japan was in Okinawa in 1966. The spookiest one was in Nakatsugawa.

There's a very large cemetery in this section of Tokyo. I didn't do that much exploring, the rain was really starting to come down.

Dia de los Muertos

Cemetery - Mazatlan  2002

Cemetery - Mazatlan  2002

Mike's visit to Mazatlan happened to coincide with the Day of the Dead festival. And, Dan and Mike just happened to be passing by a local cemetery on November 1 and noticed the activities taking place.

Of course, one tries to be discreet . . . still, with a Minolta SLR, it was kind of hard.

Cemetery, Okinawa

Cemetery (Okinawa) - Japan  1966

So . . . is this the cemetery seen in yesterday's photo? I like to think that it is.

. . . from the archives #56: Cemetery—Pacific Grove, 1987

Taken with a Tachihara 4x5 camera fitted with a roll film adapter. I was constantly accusing the camera of causing light leaks, only to find out (much later) that it was actually the 4x5 sheet film holders that were the culprits. The roll film adapter alleviated the problem considerably.

I think that I was in the Monterey area to attend a photo workshop led by Rod Dresser, but I might have my dates wrong. I know that this was my second attempt at photographing the cemetery. (The first attempt was with a twin-lens reflex.)

Pacific Grove Cemetery

Cemetery (Pacific Grove) - Monterey County  2021

I had to resort to Google Maps to find this place. No fog this time, as there was when I took the photo below in 1987.

Eugene Cemetery

The Eugene Masonic Cemetery, that is, complete with its own website.

Mike wandered around in the growing twilight, the setting sun reflecting off the tombstones. Indeed, he had been here before . . . now, when was it?

Monday Horse Blogging

Horses - Utah  2012
How pastoral! Up above, the glimmerings of Bryce Canyon's spires, down below in the meadow, horses grazing. At least they were ignoring the photographer . . . usually they walk over to see if there's an apple, or carrot available.

In fact, the horses were to be found on the far edge of a little cemetery, which is why Mike had stopped in the first place.

Winnemucca

Winnemucca Sign - Nevada  2024

Cemetery (Winnemucca) - Nevada  2024

First overnight of the trip was in Winnemucca (just as in the 1987 trip.) I was able to get some exercise by walking over to the local cemetery.

Later that night I peeked outside for a night shot of the motel's parking lot.

Nakatsugawa - Evening Clouds

Cemetery (Nakatsugawa) - Japan  2016

Evening Building (Nakatsugawa) - Japan  2016

That evening Hali and I took a stroll around our hotel. As I said, it was located on the outskirts of town, so there were cultivated fields and a cemetery within walking distance. As it got dark, clouds began to roll in and bats began to flit about, appropriately enough, given the increasingly gloomy aspect.

We ended up at the local Family Mart, buying little snacky things for dinner.

Scenes from the Skyliner - 2

Residential Area, Cemetery - Japan  2023

Residential Area - Japan  2023

Top photo: there's a cemetery in the lower right hand corner! Interesting.

Bottom photo: Narita Airport was located in a rural area of Japan*, so the landscape becomes more suburban and forested nearer to the airport.

*Very controversial

Nippori Sightems

Flowers (Nippori) - Japan  2023

Flowers, Mail Slot (Nippori) - Japan  2023

Nippori is a train station on the Yamanote Line; you can also catch a high-speed train to Narita Airport from there. These photos were taken as we were walking down a quiet side street in the Nippori vicinity. On the route there were various nicely decorated businesses and residences, as well as a political poster for the Communist Party! (Pointed out to us by Jim. Theme is anti-military spending, as far as I can tell.)

BTW, in 2014 I visited the large cemetery nearby.

. . . from the archives #52: Baby Seymour—Eugene, 1984

Mike was wandering around an old cemetery in Eugene with tripod and twin-lens reflex when he spotted Baby Seymour’s tombstone almost covered with ivy. After developing the negative and printing it, he noticed the spider lurking in the lower right.

Although the current removal of the vines and debris is more respectful, photographically speaking the overgrown look is much preferred.

Hornitos Cemetery

Tombstones (Hornitos) - Mariposa County  2016

Tombstones (Hornitos) - Mariposa County  2016

I spent some time wandering around the old tombstones in back of the church. The heat was starting to rise in the sun-baked landscape; walking around the hard-packed earth I was just a little worried about rattlesnakes.

St. Catherine's Catholic church. The weather was slightly more clear that it was last year. As usual, I wandered around the cemetery in back. Also of note: a 1948 photo of the church by Minor White!
