Distant thunderheads loomed high above the town when I returned to the motel (with burger and fries).
Later, a loud drumming noise outside: I opened the door to my room to discover a major downpour was going on!

In Alturas, Main Street is Highway 395, for me, a much-traveled route just east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. But up here, not so often.
Alturas is over 4000 feet elevation, which I didn't know. Nice evening light.

I arrived in Alturas later than I had planned. I checked in at my motel (an Emergency Response trailer parked opposite) and drove over to the local Forest Service HQ, where I got some maps and pointers from a helpful government employee.
In point of fact, the largest employer in Alturas is the government (Federal, State and local.) All its elected representatives are Republicans.

Despite its abundance of wilderness, recreational
opportunities, hunting and fishing resources, and resplendent natural beauty,
tourism is not a major sector of the local economy - largely due to the city's
remote location.
Alturas in 2007 wasn't exactly thriving. Mike was interested to discover that highway 395 (of Eastern Sierra fame) runs right through town.
