Trestle Bridge (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

Photos taken looking out of our motel window. Wow! The bridge was originally built for the railroad, now it's for pedestrians. The web has more information about the bridge than you might want.

Interesting. These are my second and third flag photos taken on the trip. (First one in the town of Mendocino.)

Interesting.

California Western - 1

California Western RR Car (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

Art, Railroad Car (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

"Gas-powered, self-propelled, passenger railcars were added in 1925; and, after Pullman service was discontinued, CWR steam passenger trains ran only when the motorcars were out of service for maintenance. The passenger coaches were scrapped in 1949. The motorcars were nicknamed "Skunks" because people said, "You can smell 'em before you can see 'em."

I remember taking the train to its midpoint some years ago. It's my understanding that it no longer makes a regular run over to Willits.

But, they're still working on the tracks! Below, a little maintenance car we had to stop for on the way out of town.

Noyo Harbor Mural

Mural, Noyo Harbor (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

I had to leave our restaurant and walk back for this photo. The sun was starting to get kind of low: I was worried that the glare might wipe out the sky. But no! . . . the Canon came through.

Ocean (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

Cypresses, Ocean (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

The Botanical Garden starts at Highway 1 and goes to the ocean. The sea seemed a bit rough that day, but perhaps it's always like that.

Nasturtiums (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

We made a morning excursion to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. You enter just off the main street (Highway 1). We'd never been there before . . . luckily we had known to get advance tickets.

Giant Burger

Giant Burger (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

We got burgers and fries to go, then drove back to the motel's picnic table and ate outside. Burgers were OK, but fries weren't crispy, alas.

Monday Seal Blogging

Seal, Processing Salmon (Fort Bragg) - Mendocino County  2021

We were having an outside dinner in the Noyo Harbor district when we noticed some of our fellow diners peering excitedly at a recently arrived boat. Freshly caught salmon was being processed, and some of the scraps were being tossed into the water, where a large seal was waiting. Hard to concentrate on your fish tacos when there was so much action going on.

Mendocino 4 - Masonic Statue

Old Masonic Building (Mendocino) - Mendocino County  2021

"Time and the Maiden" Statue (Mendocino) - Mendocino  County  2021

Interesting art work. There's an informative explainer online, if one is interested.

By the way, the statue was also photographed by Ansel Adams (below). He was able to get a more head-on view.

Mendocino - 3

Wild Roses (Mendocino) - Mendocino County  2021

Rose (Mendocino) - Mendocino County  2021

Mendocino was featured in a New York Times story recently concerning California's current drought (paywall, alas.) Future water supply is sure to be drastically restricted . . . wonder what will happen to all those flowers.

Mendocino - 2

Flowers, Wood Wall (Mendocino) - Mendocino County  2021

Hydrangeas (Mendocino) - Mendocino County  2021

I was lugging around the Nikon Z5 with a 24-200mm zoom lens, which combination veteran Nikon users somehow think is small and lightweight, but isn't.

Oroville

Alley (Oroville) - Butte County  1997

Club Sierra (Oroville) - Butte County  1997

Some friends of ours used to own a trailer in the woods near Oroville; I was able to stay there a few times. Photos were taken with a Mamiya twin-lens reflex.

Leaving Alturas

Camero (Alturas) - Modoc County  2017

Sears Catalog Sales (Alturas) - Modoc County  2017

A few last photos taken in the AM before I headed south on highway 395. Very interesting area . . . will need to plan a return trip in a different season.
