We were waiting for a table to open at Matsubara, a soba restaurant in a Kamakura suburb. While standing around I glanced at the map on the iPhone and realized that I was fairly close to Sagami Bay. I took the chance and headed towards the beach.

Wow . . . there I was, down at the beach! My first Japan beach experience since my 1965 adventure!

Next morning the weather was overcast and foggy . . . nice and atmospheric. I guess that technically it wasn't raining, but it was quite wet out. I put on my parka and fitted my camera with the 25mm lens (with the rubber lens hood) and ventured forth.

Well, that's the problem with some of these older negatives: there's really no way to know exactly where they were taken. Sometimes it's obvious, and sometimes I just remember the circumstances for some reason.

But not with this one. So, for now, just "California Coast" as the location. Standing on a cliff somewhere, pointing the camera downwards.

I used a Nikon F 35mm camera, with, probably, Panatomic-X film.

So . . . I carried a tripod this time! Alas, the wind was constant, so long exposures for still photography weren't all that practical. I ended up using it exclusively for video.

Speaking of the wind, notice the last shot in the video. Just afterwards I turned towards the waves to take a still photo when I heard a soft thud in back of me. Yes, the little Nikon I've been using for video had been knocked over by the wind, while still on the tripod, and was buried in the sand. The lens refused to retract for a while, but a little prodding at the grains of sand with a Swiss Army knife seemed to do the trick.

After the deer sighting we had dinner at The Fishwife in Asilomar. We drove back to our motel on the road that loops around Monterey Bay . . . in time for me to get this sunset shot.

Once again Mike found himself at the famous Pismo Beach Pier. This time he was equipped with two cameras: an Olympus E-PL5 with a wide angle 9-18mm zoom, and an Olympus E-M10 with the superzoom 14-150mm lens . . . both dangling around his neck. Luckily, both cameras are quite lightweight so that wasn't a problem. But they did have a tendency to get tangled up. The photos above were taken with the wide angle zoom.
