Grass, Shed, Clouds - Canada  2024

Road - Canada  2024

So, the road photo above has been posted earlier, but this time I tried a black and white approach.

Very short visit. But nice.

Canadian Pacific

Canadian Pacific (Fernie) - Canada  2024

Raining. I think some drops might have gotten on the Canon's lens. I don't recall the makeup of the rest of the train.

By the way, I just found out that Fernie is located quite close to some open-pit coal mines. Trains travel to west coast ports for the coal to be exported.

Rest Area

Truck, Rest Area - Canada  2024

Gravel pull out. There was an RV parked near my car that was idling the whole time I was there.

Canada

Leaving USA - Montana  2024

Welcome , British Columbia - Canada  2024

I had noticed that Kalispell was fairly close to the Canadian border, so I brought my passport along on the trip, just in case. I decided to travel to Fernie, a small tourist town not that far from the border.

The interrogation at the border was surprisingly robust! (Me: "Oh, I'm just going to drive north for a few hours and take some photos." Her (riffling through my passport): "Well, are you planning on selling any of the photos you take?" Me: "Alas, I don't think so."

Maybe there's some sort of copyright issues on photos taken in Canada. Don't know. In any event I was finally allowed to enter the country.

British Columbia and San Francisco / Missing Camera

ATM Machine - Vancouver  2017

Luggage Carousel (SFO) - San Francisco  2017

Two iPhone panorama shots.

Top: Hali at an ATM machine, Mike holding the iPhone while his Canon G5X dangles around his neck. Alas, that's one of the last glimpses we'll have of the Canon, which went missing - somehow - in the departures lounge of the Vancouver airport. (!!!???) Although it wasn't always the most reliable camera, Mike used it quite extensively in several locations, from Utah to Japan to Yosemite.

Bottom: A luggage carousel at San Francisco's SFO airport. The funny thing is, Mike didn't realize the Canon was missing until he arrived home and looked in his daypack. No camera.

Vancouver Miscellaneous Food Post

Torn Bread and Tallow Butter (AnnaLena) - Vancouver  2017

Chen's - Vancouver  2017

Top: Torn bread and tallow butter at AnnaLena. Trendy, but good.

Next: Chen's Shanghai Restaurant in Richmond. Had their soup dumplings (XLB), very good, but could spurt if the diner isn't careful. Also, smoked chicken, which we kept as leftovers for lunch at the departures terminal at the airport.

Below: Soft serve ice cream in Gastown, a touristy Vancouver section along the waterfront.

Clam Chowder (Boulevard) - Vancouver  2017

Clam chowder at Boulevard. Probably the highlight of the food tour we took in Vancouver. We would have liked to come back later for a regular meal, but couldn't manage it.

Monday Crow Blogging

Alley, Crow - Vancouver  2017

As I walked around Vancouver I became particularly intrigued by its alleyways, which seemed to me to be of much more photographic interest than the glass-covered highrises. So I took a number of alleyway photos; however and alas, very few of them are of any particular value.

Macarons - Vancouver  2017

Famous pastry shop in Vancouver, known for their macarons, which were OK, I guess.

But we much prefered their croissants, purchased there and taken to the nearest Starbucks to have with drip coffee. No problem finding a Starbucks, as there seems to be one every half-block.

For some reason I never got a photo of the croissants. Ate them too fast most likely.

Vancouver Sightems - 2

High-Rise Housing - Vancouver  2017

Cranes - Vancouver  2017

I was impressed by the amount of multi-story housing structures in and about Vancouver, somewhat resembling Japan. If these kind of buildings were proposed in the Bay Area, the consternation would be considerable.

Nice view of the cranes once the cruise ship blocking the view had departed.

Pirate Outing - Vancouver  2017

Seen on Granville Island. Lots of food items in the marketplace there, reminding me of Seattle.

Burrard Street Bridge

Burrard Street Bridge - Vancouver  2017

Burrard Street Bridge, Self-Portrait - Vancouver  2017

Major Vancouver street. The water taxi to Granville Island goes underneath the bridge.

So, yes, we went to Granville Island. Hali has more stamina than Mike for that sort of thing.
