Shamrock Run Billboard - Portland  2019

Run Assistants - Portland  2019

Our last day in Portland. Very exciting! It took all of my will power to keep from joining the runners.

Portland Views

River View - Portland  2019

Mt. Hood as seen from the Japanese garden.

Willamette River view taken from a restaurant/bar in a downtown high rise. Too crowded . . . we didn't stay, but I did take some photos.

Reminiscent of Ryoanji. Also, of the details there.

Teahouse - Portland  2019

Exhibition Hall - Portland  2019

We'd visited the famous Rose Garden before, but not the Japanese Garden (located next to one another.) Very impressive! More impressive to me, at least, than the famous garden located in Kanazawa.

Chop Suey

Chop Suey - Portland  2019

Chop Suey, Fortune - Portland  2019

We tried to find a Chinese bakery as we had done in Vancouver. But nothing, alas.

BTW, lower photo has a homeless person in it. Big homeless population in Portland . . . maybe not as much as San  Francisco.

Portland Art

Owl Mural - Portland  2019

Bear Sculptures - Portland  2019

Think it's an owl, anyway. Reminds me of the San Francisco bat mural.

All of my Portland photos were taken with either a Canon G5X or an iPhone 7 Plus.

Portland Black and White (Minor White)

Columns, Trees - Portland  2019

Railroad Tracks - Portland  2019

"The Oregon Centennial was the 100th anniversary of the statehood of the U.S. state of Oregon. The day of the anniversary was February 14, 1959, but centennial events took place throughout the year. Festivities were held all over the state, with the major attractions at the Oregon Centennial Exposition and International Trade Fair, located at the Expo Center in Portland's Kenton neighborhood, which took place from June 10 to September 17, 1959." - Wikipedia

I remember attending the show at the Expo Center during a family visit to Portland to visit my grandparents. The main attraction for me was a very compelling exhibit of photographs by Minor White:

"In 1959, the Oregon Camera Club included several of White’s WPA photographs in the exhibit This Land, This Oregon at the Oregon centennial exposition. One of the club’s leaders recruited him to teach a workshop, which continued yearly in Oregon until 1967. He also exhibited his own retrospective, 'Sequence 13/Return to the Bud,' at the exposition. 'I feel that a trajectory that started in Portland, Oregon, in 1938,' he wrote, 'has been completed.'"

White had earlier photographed Portland's older buildings under a WPA project; I tried to echo the mood of his work in the photos posted above.

Rose Garden

Roses - Portland  2015

Shakespeare Garden - Portland  2015

Photos taken during a last-minute visit to Portland's famous Rose Garden.

"On clear days there are views of the Cascade Mountains, with Mount Hood featured prominently."

Alas, it wasn't at all clear during our stay, so we never did get to see Mount Hood. Nice flowers, though.

Laurelhurst Park

Laurelhurst Park - Portland  2015

Oregon Grape - Portland  2015

Wanting to visit some other section of Portland other than the downtown area we managed to wend our way over the river to Laurelhurst Park.

Just a little bit gloomy under the overcast sky, but very picturesque.

Drinking Fountain

Drinking Fountain - Portland  2015

One of a number of drinking fountains scattered throughout Portland's downtown. And they're always running! No water shortage up in Oregon, I guess.
