Boomtown

Boomtown Sign, Smoke - Nevada  2022

Truckee Air Quality Sept 15, 2022

I drove from Ely to Reno, staying overnight at the Best Western at Boomtown. Once inside the hotel I stayed there, not wanting to experience the smoke-filled air outside. Driving home the next day, the smoke was a continuous presence almost until I reached Davis.

The air was better in 2018.

Fritos & Beer

Fritos & Beer - Truckee  2022

Toyota, Snow Banks - Truckee  2022

I had thought that my destination was somewhere near South Lake Tahoe. But no, we had reservations at the Hyatt Hotel in Incline Village, Nevada. This meant driving up Highway 80 to Truckee, then heading over to the north edge of Lake Tahoe.

For lunch I bought a sandwich and Fritos at a convenient Subway (influenced by KDramas? - no.) I remembered an open area just north of Truckee on Highway 89 and drove there. Lots of snow! I found a place to park and had a tailgate Fritos & Beer lunch.

Autumn Fritos and Beer

Fritos and Beer - Sierra Nevada  2019

Fritos and Beer Staging - Sierra Nevada  2019

A small nature preserve just north of Truckee on Highway 89, nobody there. So, ideal conditions for me to set up an idealized Fritos and Beer still-life.

Truckee

Building, Tree (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2019

Windows (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2019

No trip to Boomtown would be complete without a short walk around Truckee. It seems as if the small dilapidated structures are slated for a development project.

I also went on a short hike along Sagehen Creek. Will post some photos at some point. Maybe.

Truckee Experiences

Pizza and Beer - Truckee  2019

Wharfs - Lake Tahoe  2019

Pizza and beer! Good . . . except . . . gave me a touch of "pizza stomach" if you know what I mean.

We drove south to the north shore of Lake Tahoe, ran into a lot of traffic, turned around and drove back. But not before I pulled over to take an I-was-there iPhone panorama.

Building, Window Reflection - Truckee  2019

Truckee Railroad Utility  Structure - Truckee  2019

I've always liked the high altitude light found in Truckee. But . . . on the perimeter of town you can see a lot of development taking place. With more to come, I expect.

Truckee

Truck, Motel Parking Lot - Truckee  2019

Truckee Railroad Museum - Truckee  2019

Motel parking lot . . . seen before on the blog. Hali and I had been needing some "mountain time," so we headed up to Truckee in early August.

Truckee Sightems

Mobil (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2018

Shacks (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2018

Variations on a few of last year's photos.

So, I had changed my plans. Instead of Alturas, I started driving towards Willows, hoping to take some photos at the nearby Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge nearby. The forecast called for a storm approaching from the west, so after a brief stop in Truckee I got back on highway 80 . . . heading west.

More Snow

Pine Branch, Snow (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2017

Branches, Snow (Boomtown) - Nevada  2017

Snow kept falling on my head off overhanging pine tree branches while I was walking around Truckee. Hmph.

After Thursday's storm, bare Nevada branches were coated with cool-looking clumps of snow.

Truckee - 5

McDonald's, Snow (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2017

Truckee River, Snow (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2017

By the time I ended up in a McDonald's parking lot it had started to snow. Heavily . . . I wouldn't know, not having that much experience. Not that great for still photography, however.

Truckee - 4

Buildings, Trees (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2017

This was a unique opportunity: snow-covered landscape scenes, just hours away from the Bay Area.

West End (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2017

I drove the Toyota to a less high-end part of town, where I could park for free.

Chains Installed on Caltrans Truck (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2017

I drove up to Truckee early Thursday morning wondering about road conditions. But although the forecast called for heavy snow the short drive up into the mountains was uneventful. I found a parking lot, then wandered off to see what I could see.

Truckee

Food Shop, Mountains (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2015

Shed, RR Tracks (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2015

Mike has always liked Truckee . . . and other high-altitude towns. The light seems more intense, somehow. We had a nice visit!

In spite of Mike's lingering cold.

Golf Course, Frost

Golf Course, Snow (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2015

Frost, Taillight (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2015

Our motel was next to a golf course randomly covered by thin blankets of snow. The next morning the taillight on our car had intricate filigrees of frost.

Winterized Plants

Winterized Plant (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2015

Winterized Plants (Truckee) - Sierra Nevada  2015

We were puzzled by these ubiquitous wrapped plants . . . some kind of conceptual art?

No, they've been "winterized," bundled up to protect against the coming winter.
