Granite, Leaves (1996)

Granite, Leaves - Yosemite 1996

Another photo taken with a 4x5 view camera. Had to use a tripod, of course.

I'd guess that this location was somewhere in the eastern side of Yosemite Valley, on the trail to Mirror Lake, where it's shady for most of the morning.

Dogwood Blossoms, Merced River (1996)

Dogwood Blossoms, Merced River - Yosemite  1996

I wanted to find a spot where I could have the river in the foreground with some dogwood blossoms in the dark forest beyond. Took some driving and parking at various pullouts before I found this scene.

I used a largeish Toyo Field 4x5 camera with a Nikon lens. This image is from a recent scan . . . a vertical crop from a 4x5 horizontal negative.

El Capitan (1996)

El Capitan - Yosemite  1996

The last 35mm shot in this series. I think that I was using Minolta SLRs during this time.

St. Catherine's Church (Hornitos) (1996)

Church (Hornitos) - Mariposa County  1996

I visited this church earlier this year during my unsuccessful Yosemite trip.

The 35mm negatives for both this photo and yesterday's Soo Line photo were very detailed in the foreground elements, but the skies in both images were quite bad. I used Photoshop to perform a sky substitute for them both, then added artificial grain using Camera Raw.

Soo Line (1996)

Soo Line - Central California  1996

" . . . [the Soo Line] is named for the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (MStP&SSM), which was commonly known as the Soo Line after the phonetic spelling of Sault . . ."

So, "sault" is pronounced as "soo." Didn't know that.

I guess this was taken somewhere on the route to Yosemite. There's railroad stuff to be seen in Escalon, so maybe I saw the boxcar there.

Yosemite Fall (1996)

Yosemite Fall - Yosemite  1996

I've been scanning some 1996 negatives recently. This photo was possibly taken in May during one of my routine Yosemite camping visits.

Sea Castle

Sea Castle Apartments - Santa Monica  1990

This had been shown on the blog before, but looking at the scan more closely this time I realized that there was a self-portrait hidden in the image:

Jockey for Her

Jockey for Her - Santa Monica  1990

Santa Monica as the location of the photo is a guess. Other photos on the film roll were taken near the Santa Monica pier.

Price of regular gas as shown on the right hand side: $1.07.

Taking Photos - Los Angeles  1990

An early version of Melrose Avenue photographers. See this 2023 post, for a later example.

Great Basin National Park - 5 (1993)

Bristlecone Pine (Great Basin National Park) - Nevada  1993

Desert Plants (Great Basin National Park) - Nevada  1993

In 1993 my wife Hali, my daughter Shawna and myself were on our way to Colorado. We were able to get a campsite in Great Basin National Park and stayed two nights. During the one day we had available I drove up to visit the bristlecone pine trees while they took a tour of Lehman Caves.

These photos were taken with a large format view camera.

Austin, Nevada

Building Art (Austin) - Nevada  2022

Building Art (Austin) - Nevada  2016

. . . through the years. The satellite TV dish seems to holding up pretty well . . . unless it's been replaced in the intervening 29 years since I took the photo below.

Building Art (Austin) - Nevada  1993

Google Street View has captured a wider view of the same building, in August, 2022 . . . one month before my most recent photo.

Mono Lake #1

Mono Lake - Mono County  1994

A strange desert lake just east of Yosemite. Here’s a shot of Mono Lake, taken in, I think, May, 1994, when there was still snow on the Sierra crest west of the lake. I was staying in a motel in nearby Lee Vining, got up early and drove over to the visitor’s center parking lot. As usual at that early hour, nobody was there.

I set up my 4x5 view camera and took this photograph, shivering, as the sun rose over the desert expanses to the east. (Click for larger photo.)

This is the my only photo of Mono Lake I've been able to find that was taken in the last century. There must be more!

Emerald Bay

Emerald Bay - Lake Tahoe  2022

Emerald Bay - Lake Tahoe 1998

Top: I parked on the side of the road near the Emerald Bay scenic overlook. Lots of snow! I stuck with peeking over the snow banks to get a shot of Fannette Island.

Bottom: Back in 1998 I was able to hike a little higher to get an unobstructed view of the bay and island (film photograph).

Marquard's, 1999

Marquard's - San Francisco  1999

Closed in 2004:

Marquard's Smoke Shop feels like a little slice of Sam Spade's San Francisco. Squint through the dusty windows under the vintage awning and you can almost picture the hard-boiled private eye sauntering in for a bottle of whiskey and a pack of smokes.

But by the end of the month, the newsstand on the corner of Powell and O'Farrell streets will go the way of many mom-and-pop shops, closing as commercial rents soar out of reach.

Point Lobos - 1999

Grass, Ocean - Point Lobos  1999

Wave - Point Lobos  1999

Taken in the days when Point Lobos wasn't inundated by crowds.

The community has spoken, and State Parks has listened: Starting as early as next summer, visiting Point Lobos State Natural Reserve will require a reservation, aimed to prevent the park from being loved to death, and to curb the sometimes chaotic parking on the side of Highway 1.

“I’ve heard from docents who used to help visitors see whales, and now they’re picking up diapers, says Kate Daniels, chief of staff for County Supervisor Mary Adams, whose district includes the Carmel and Big Sur coast.

Dirt Road, Humboldt County

Dirt Road - Humboldt County  1996

Scene near Ferndale in Humboldt County. I think. A 35mm photo.
