Litchfield's Sign (San Rafael) - Marin County  2026

Walking around with a Sony RX100 while the Highlander was being serviced.

"Dubbed “California’s Las Vegas,” Litchfield’s Bermuda Palms was the place to be during the ’60s and ’70s. Built in the late 1940s by Irving “Whitey” Litchfield, a millionaire construction mogul, the resort had a luxury swimming pool, color television, nightly dancing and rooms for under $10 a night."

McDonalds KPop Demon Hunters Poster - Alameda County  2026

The start of my most recent road trip, driving from Marin County to Mariposa County via Highway 49.

Alas, I wasn't aware of the Saja Boys breakfast meal when I got the same ole Egg McMuffin that I always get.

Monday Woodpecker Blogging

Acorn Woodpecker - Lake Lagunitas  2026

Pileated Woodpecker - Lake Lagunitas  2026

The top two photos were taken up at Lake Lagunitas. The second one was taken with a (non-zoom) 25mm prime lens.

Bottom photo taken during one of our Saturday walks . . . a Nuttall's Woodpecker. "In particular, these woodpeckers prefer oak woodlands, although they also occur in riparian sites and chaparral in the most southern parts of their range because of the decrease in oak abundance."

The Sony RX100 I used focused mainly on the branches, not the bird.

Monday Spotted Towhee Blogging

Spotted Towhee (Fairfax) - Marin County  2026

Making its very distinctive call. There's been a lot of them around recently, but usually they're hidden in the background foliage. This one was right out there! Photo taken with a Sony RX100.

Oak Tree

Fallen Oak - Marin County  2026

We walk by this fallen-down tree quite frequently. I photographed it before it fell, also quite frequently, after we moved to Marin in 1981. Below, a composite photo taken in 2010.

Top photo taken using a Sony RX100. Bottom one using a Nikon D90 DSLR.

By the way, San Quentin is now officially known as "San Quentin Rehabilitation Center." Interesting writeup in Wikipedia.

Monday Towhee Blogging

California Towhee (Fairfax) - Marin County  2026

"Along the Pacific seaboard from southern Oregon to Baja, this plain brown bird is a common denizen of brushy places, from wild chaparral hillsides to the borders of gardens and city parks. California Towhees sometimes hide in the shrubbery, where they may be noticed mainly by their sharp callnotes and the squealing duets of mated pairs. At other times they come out on open ground, to scratch in the leaf-litter with both feet as they search for food."

It was perched on a car's rearview mirror for some reason, waiting long enough for me to turn the Sony RX100 on and zoom in for this shot.

Rocks, Reflections, American River - Sacramento Valley  2025

Raining . . . footing was a little bit tricky. Hali kept seeing salmon jumping across the river, too far away for a photo.

Top photo taken with a Sony RX100 . . . makes a nice print! Bottom one taken with an iPhone 13 Pro Max using the wide angle option.

Railroad Museum - 3 (Cab Forward Articulated)

Cab Forward Rods and Drivers - Sacramento  2025

Cab Forward Articulated - Sacramento  2025

"Southern Pacific 4294 is a AC-12 class 4-8-8-2 cab-forward–type steam locomotive that was owned and operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP). It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) in March 1944 and was used hauling Southern Pacific Railroad's (SP) trains over the Sierra Nevada, often working on Donner Pass in California. Today it is preserved at the California State Railroad Museum (CSRM) in Sacramento, California." --Wikipedia

The locomotive is so large that I had to use the iPhone's wide-angle option to get a (stretched) photo of the whole engine. A Sony RX100 was used for the top photo.

In 1958 my father and I were visiting Southern Pacific's Taylor Yard in Los Angeles when I came across some cab-forwards decaying on the tracks. So I have a 67-year old photo of the soon to be scrapped number 4149.
