Buster's

Buster's - Bridgeport  2016

Mike stared in disbelief. Buster's, closed! It wasn't that long ago that Mike stopped here for a six-pack of Tecate!

OK, so it was eight years ago.

Rick E. of Sacramento has a nice essay on Yelp:

Since posting new signs on US Route 395 proclaiming a population of 843, Bridgeport is 69% more town than it used to be. But since last year's closure of Buster's Market, it's got at least 69% less fresh meat, produce, and sundries. And it's such a shame.

I have warm childhood memories of cruising up to the Buster's parking lot with my grandpa to check out the price specials advertised in black magic marker on giant sheets of butcher paper. My grandpa was an annual long-term (April-October) camper at Mono Village and regular user of the small store there, but when he needed more variety or a fairer price, he'd sail the Lincoln Towncar down to Buster's. And while it was still less variety and more expensive than a full-service grocer, the selection at Buster's was worthwhile enough to save the gasoline it'd take to motor down to Mammoth. In some ways, the variety was greater than a mainstream full-service market, such as when my grandpa introduced me to venison when it was advertised on a butcher-paper window special.

One of the best reviews I've read on Yelp!

Bridgeport Courthouse

Courthouse - Bridgeport  2016

Mike wanted to return to the Green Creek Campground for some Eastern Sierra photos. After passing the Marine base, he arrived at highway 395 and turned right. Some miles down the road he passed through Bridgeport, purchased some Gatorade and continued on.

This photo was taken with a Canon G5X pointing upwards, knowing full well that there was going to be vertical perspective distortion. But what are you going to do? I guess one solution would be to stand across the street and use a view camera's swings and tilts, like Mr. Adams did in 1938:

Adams, Courthouse (MOMA Collection)

But you couldn't do that today, because those little trees in Adams' photo are now quite tall and block any view from across the street.

Monday Cow Blogging: Road to Bodie 2006

Cows, Irises, Sawtooth Range - Mono County  2006

Mike and Hali drove from their campground at Leavitt Meadows following Highway 395 south through Bridgeport to the Bodie turnoff. On the way they passed vast iris-dotted meadows stretching to the mountains.

Genoa & Bridgeport

We drove from Lake Tahoe over Kingsbury Grade to our campsite on Green Creek in the Sierra, passing though Genoa, Nevada and Bridgeport on the way.

Genoa is a historic town with a nicely landscaped park, a museum (not open yet) and so forth. I liked the sideways light hitting this porch.

I stopped for a six-pack of Tecate at Buster’s in Bridgeport (where I saw this house next to the parking lot), then drove to our campsite.
