I tried to get an updated photo of the highway 70 view . . . all I could come up with is the Google Street View below.

[UPDATE] Just by chance I just now (October 3, 2022) discovered that the top photo is a view of Spotted Wolf Canyon. Wow!

Dead Horse Point

In 1993 we stayed overnight in Moab on our way back to California from Colorado. I ventured forth on my own with a Toyo-Field 4x5 to Dead Horse point, not knowing exactly what to expect.

It turns out that it's one of those atmospheric, three-dimensional scenes that are difficult to capture in photographs. I remember being quite impressed with the canyons-within-canyons view. Somewhat similar to the Canyonlands 2016 photos.

Precisionist Catalog (1960s) - Marin County  2018

Back in the 1960's the Los Angeles County Museum of Art held an exhibit called "The Precisionist  View in American Art." I remember visiting the show multiple times, being quite intrigued by the images on view. I was particularly struck by the art of Charles Sheeler, who was both a photographer and painter.

Most of all, I was mesmerized by his 1939 painting of a locomotive titled "Rolling Power." Of course, I was a great train enthusiast, so no wonder I liked it.

How nice, therefore, to be able to see it once again, this time in the De Young Museum in San Francisco, where a show called "Cult of the Machine" has been running (will be there through August.)

Interesting frame . . . not what I would have picked, perhaps. The steam showing in the lower right hand corner is a nice touch.

Quite possibly I had this painting in mind when I photographed that Union Pacific locomotive (diesel, alas) in Utah in 2016.

Sandstone country was left far behind as Mike headed west towards the Nevada state line, pausing for one last Fritos 'n Beer photo op.

Union Pacific

"Sometimes a wrong turn can lead to some great photo opportunities." As he entered the town of Milford Mike spotted a group of Union Pacific diesel locomotives sitting on the track off to his right. He parked near the train station and walked back to get this shot of one of the powerful engines with some snowy mountains as a backdrop. So, even though Milford wasn't on Mike's route, the inadvertent detour turned out quite nicely.

He used a Canon G5X for the photo, which incidentally makes a rather nice print. (See below.)

As I drove through Milford I was quite sure that I was seeing it for the first time. But no. I had been here twenty years earlier, as conclusively proved by my reliable contact sheets.

And the Google Map car was also there, in 2014.

Beaver, Utah

OK, so I wasn't supposed to be in Beaver, which fact I didn't discover until I pulled off and consulted an old-fashioned plastic fold-up map. Luckily there was an alternate route from Beaver over to Ely: Utah Highway 21. But how to get to 21? (I was parked at a off-ramp gas station.) After some dithering I finally realized that I had two GPS systems available, one in-car and one in the iPhone.

How seductive! Once started, the soothing GPS voice took me through Beaver to Center St, where I took a left onto Utah 21 heading towards Milford.

It even comes with your typical contradictory Yelp reviews!

#1) I don't know what happened next, but it was all a food coma induced, taste bud blowing moment. The potato salad was indeed homemade and everything I knew it would be. My chicken fingers came with corn and real mashed potatoes with homemade gravy...and that scone. Now that scone isn't like the hard nasty pastry you get from Starbucks. This thing was made from scratch with love...lots of love and then fried ever so slightly to perfection. It could have been mixed with mashed potatoes and gravy or had blueberries put on it. So versatile! I know, because I had all of the above with [it].

#2) Mom's is an apt name, because the restaurant seemed to be populated entirely by shrieking children and crying babies. Judging from the other reviews, ordering the scone is the thing to do but, alas, sometimes you see the other reviews too late. The breakfast menu is about as limited and uninspired as a breakfast menu can be and the abandoned food on neighboring tables looked heavy and bland: limpid eggs, pyramids of barely-touched biscuits and gravy that had the color of volcanic ash and the consistency of a blood clot.

Someday I must actually go in and order a scone.

Mike got off the freeway in Salina to explore, if only for a short time, downtown Salina, since he had been there before. Unbeknownst to him, however, was the fact that he was supposed to pick up Highway 50 at this point. But, since that fact was unbeknownst, he did his little photo stuff, then got back on Highway 70, not heading in the wrong direction exactly, but not going where he had intended.

Hm. I seem to recall an earlier cow-crossing-the-road incident, although in a different part of Utah.
