Bishop Pine, Rain - Point Reyes  2020

Limantour Parking Lot - Point Reyes  2020

So, I always get here early on a weekday morning. But I can tell by the size of the parking lot just how crowded it must become at times. (I had similar thoughts at Old Faithful in Yellowstone.)

Alas, the parking lot has been closed for a while now. [Update: now open, I think.]

National Parks and reserves are superficially a great thing for the general public, but their management sometimes isn't.

In an effort to "control" people and traffic, they resort to all kinds of restrictions, which can make the "nature" experience just a headache.

I've been stopped by rangers several times at Point Reyes for parking in restricted areas, or impinging on the "owners" properties, who lease the land for agriculture.

I was approached by one of those farmers once, who demanded to know "what in hell [I] thought [I] was doing" with my big camera on a tripod in "his" field.

My favorite incident was in Utah, where a ranger came up and demanded to see my "photographer's permit". I told him I didn't need one, because I wasn't proposing commercial use. He said he "knew" I was lying because my equipment was "serious" and was "obviously intended" to generate profit. He told me to meet him back at the ranger station entrance to fill out the forms and pay the fee. I didn't bother.

I wonder if David Meunch has some kind of special permit that the rest of us don't know about.

For some reason I've not had the same problems. Maybe because my cameras tend to be a lot smaller?

To be honest, the cattle farms/ranches at Point Reyes should welcome visitors. It would help them a lot in maintaining their long-term viability.
