Sand Mountain - Nevada 2022 |
About 25 miles east of Fallon. I've driven by this a number of times before, but I've never actually driven down the road to the dunes. But now that I know more about the site, I probably won't be going there at all:
"Visitation averages 50,000-70,000 visitors a year with the primary activity comprised of riding ATV's, motorcycles, sand rails, dune buggies and side by sides. Sand sailing and sand boarding are also practiced by those adventurous enough to brave the OHVs and the climb to the top of the dune."
So, not my thing. By the way, the view to the dunes was quite smoky . . . the photo required heavy use of Photoshop's "dehaze" slider.

As one who never saw a dune he didn’t like . . . a late friend of mine, Gary Adams—a great large format freak like me—so hated the buggy crowd, that he would vandalize the truck vehicles of violators. I hate buggies too, but the best dunes I know are down the central California coast, where the buggies don’t seem to be as much of a problem.
There's one dune area near Nipomo that allows vehicles to drive onto the beach! Strange.
I've used 35mm film to take some DV dune photos which aren't bad, IMHO.
