So, we had gotten up at 4AM to catch this train. Not that many people around at that time in the morning.
Note the pre-bought coffee drinks . . . one big problem that we hadn't anticipated was the overall lack of morning coffee options throughout our trip. The drinks pictured were our clever workaround. No, not hot, but kind of OK.

Around 1990, when we bought a week-long Swiss transport pass to travel around the country, we were shocked that the printed schedules listed five-minute transfer times between long-distance trains. So precise and on-time that they could guarantee this.
Same thing in Japan. The main problem is finding out exactly what track the next train is leaving from. We've learned to allow extra time in between trains.
