I remember some years ago, the SF Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll mentioned taking a freeway connection onramp in Marin County which had a "Eureka" sign as a destination. This struck him as odd, or foolish, because Eureka was so far away, like, say, a sign showing "Anchorage" on a freeway on the lower 48. Eureka doesn't seem that odd to me, though as a probable destination, it's very much less contextual than, say, Healdsburg, or Reno.

Mike has also been intrigued by the Eureka signs in Marin.
