After traveling a few miles on the highway there was an offramp for a historic marker, having to do with the original indigenous inhabitants. 

I got out the Nikon and took some photos of the train tracks and the mountains. I was immensely pleased to hear a train horn in the distance and soon enough a small train came into view. I didn't notice it at the time but there was a horse walking by himself on the dirt road adjacent to the tracks.

 I think that's the Truckee River in amongst the trees at the base of the hills.

Truckee Air Quality

In August I had started making plans to visit Great Basin National Park in September. I made a few motel reservations and researched some day hikes. I knew, of course, that there was a chance that there would be wildfires along my route. And so it proved . . . the Mosquito Fire started burning a few days before I left Marin County for Nevada. Driving up Highway 80 over the mountains the smoke became quite intense.

Seen crossing the fire road up the street from our house. It stopped on the road to sit and scratch, then moved on up the hill. I walked a bit further, stopped, then turned and looked up in hopes of spotting the coyote. There it was . . . looking at me. Curious, I guess.

After a nice, somewhat strenuous upward trek the Meadow Trail joins Sky Trail.

Hiking past the meadows of the meadow trail the environment became progressively more moist. I was happy to see the fog . . . that was the whole point of the hike!

The route I was taking went through some of the Woodward Fire's burnt areas. The fire happened in 2020, started by a lightning strike near the intersection of the Woodward Valley and Coast Trails.

I posted some photos of the firefighting crew back in 2020.
