Mom's Cafe

Mom's Cafe (Salina) - Utah  2016

Mom's Cafe (Salina) - Utah  1993

. . . in 2016 (top) and 1993 (bottom). Notice changes made in the lettering on the side.

It even comes with your typical contradictory Yelp reviews!

#1) I don't know what happened next, but it was all a food coma induced, taste bud blowing moment. The potato salad was indeed homemade and everything I knew it would be. My chicken fingers came with corn and real mashed potatoes with homemade gravy...and that scone. Now that scone isn't like the hard nasty pastry you get from Starbucks. This thing was made from scratch with love...lots of love and then fried ever so slightly to perfection. It could have been mixed with mashed potatoes and gravy or had blueberries put on it. So versatile! I know, because I had all of the above with [it].

#2) Mom's is an apt name, because the restaurant seemed to be populated entirely by shrieking children and crying babies. Judging from the other reviews, ordering the scone is the thing to do but, alas, sometimes you see the other reviews too late. The breakfast menu is about as limited and uninspired as a breakfast menu can be and the abandoned food on neighboring tables looked heavy and bland: limpid eggs, pyramids of barely-touched biscuits and gravy that had the color of volcanic ash and the consistency of a blood clot.

Someday I must actually go in and order a scone.

4 Way Pawn (Salina) - Utah  2016

Mike got off the freeway in Salina to explore, if only for a short time, downtown Salina, since he had been there before. Unbeknownst to him, however, was the fact that he was supposed to pick up Highway 50 at this point. But, since that fact was unbeknownst, he did his little photo stuff, then got back on Highway 70, not heading in the wrong direction exactly, but not going where he had intended.

Hm. I seem to recall an earlier cow-crossing-the-road incident, although in a different part of Utah.

Author Edward Abbey, a frequent visitor, described the Canyonlands as "the most weird, wonderful, magical place on earth—there is nothing else like it anywhere."

This year he visited the more northern section called "Island in the Sky:" an elongated mesa high above a vast desert wilderness.

Landscape Arch

Landscape Arch (Arches NP) - Utah  2016

After viewing both iconic arches, Mike felt that their names should possibly be reversed. This arch seems more delicate than Delicate Arch, and Delicate Arch seems somehow more landscape-y.

Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch (Arches NP) - Utah  2016

A weird, lovely, fantastic object out of nature, like Delicate Arch, has the curious ability to remind us — like rock and sunlight and wind and wilderness — that out there is a different world, older and greater and deeper by far than ours, a world which surrounds and sustains the little world of men as sea and sky sustain a ship.  The shock of the real.  For a little while we are again able to see, as a child sees, a world of marvels.  For a few moments we discover that nothing can be taken for granted, for if this ring of stone is marvelous all which shaped it is marvelous, and our journey here on earth, able to see and touch and hear in the midst of tangible and mysterious things-in-themselves, is the most strange and daring of all adventures.

Toyota (Arches NP) - Utah  2016

Made famous by Edward Abbey's "Desert Solitaire, " the book detailing his experiences as a park ranger there.

Although it initially garnered little attention, it would eventually be recognized as an iconic work of nature writing and a staple of early environmentalist writing, and brought Abbey critical acclaim and popularity as a writer of environmental, political, and philosophical issues.

Leaving Escalante

Buildings, Cliffs - Utah  2016

House, Cliffs - Utah  2016

When Mike had first started planning his Utah trip his original thought had been to go to Zion, Bryce and Escalante, then return. But then, the more he thought about it . . .

As long as he was driving so far, why not drive over to Moab and visit Arches and Canyonlands National Parks? Yes, fine. That was the plan.

So as he left Escalante he set off on Highway 12 past pastoral Utah tableaus towards the mountains that he was sure were covered in snow.
