Mt. Whitney

Mt. Whitney from the West - Sierra Nevada  2002

Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48, is appropriately peak-like when looking up at the crest from Owens Valley (as seen in 1973). So it was interesting to view its broad, mammoth bulk from the other side as we rode on a small fishermen's trail up towards the Wright Lakes.

Actually, a pretty fortuitous view, since we were way higher than we were supposed to be. When the packers caught up with us they scolded the guide and turned us around. We ended up camping within a few feet of the John Muir Trail.
