The drive from L.A. to Monterey takes some hours, more than one might think. Google Maps shows the trip taking slightly over 5 hours, but since I don't drive that fast (and stop for photos) it takes me longer.
Since I had left somewhat late, by the time I got into Monterey the sun was dipping towards the horizon and shadows were starting to lengthen.
