Devil's Garden Excursion

Truck (Devil's Garden) - Modoc County  2017

Sign (Devil's Garden) - Modoc County  2017

I got a sandwich, chips and a soda in town, then headed west to the Crowder Flat Road, paved at first, then dirt, then into the Devil's Garden area.

It could very well be that this area is quite nice in the spring . . . abundant water, flowers and wildlife. (Wild horses are said to roam the area, but I didn't see any.)

But not in August, alas. In August it seemed as if the washboard road was going to rattle the Toyota to the point that it would start to come apart. I finally stopped at an intersection and had lunch under the noontime sun, among the lava and junipers, listening to some military jets far above.

I'm such a greenhorn. What bothers me about those dirt roads most is that the locals drive them at top speed, throwing up clouds of dirt. If you try to stay ahead of them, they pass you. It's like the proverbial kid at the beach "getting sand kicked in [your] face." And if you use your air conditioner, the dust gets sucked up inside.

I experimented with the car speed. Under 10 MPH was kind of OK, and over 25 MPH was kind of OK. The problem with higher speeds is that, although the ride is smoother, you start to lose traction. But the locals didn't seem to mind losing traction.
