Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea - Los Angeles 1997

I've been recently going through some photos from the 90s. In the late 90s I switched from using Tmax black and white film for my 35mm camera to Kodacolor 200, reasoning that scanning technology was improving and digital printing was on the horizon.

Robot

Robot - San Francisco  2015

Mike happened to find himself at the UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital last month. Wandering through the corridors he came across this autonomous robot rolling down the hallway intent on delivering clean laundry.

Whoa.

Wired Magazine did a piece on it, entitled "This Incredible Hospital Robot Is Saving Lives. Also, I Hate It."

Sad Olives

Damaged Olives - Marin County  2015

Alert readers will recall earlier accounts of my experiments with harvesting and brining olives. Alas, the last two years' crops were a total failure due to the presence of olive fruit flies. After last year's disaster I was prepared to give up on any kind of harvest, but I didn't. Instead, this year I installed two (2) fruit fly traps. They're ball-shaped, using yeast pellets as attractant dissolved in water at the bottom. (See below.)

Alas again, they didn't work well enough to protect the olives. Many fruit flies were trapped, but not nearly enough to prevent another total loss.

So . . . what to do? The next option presented at an olive seminar I attended was to prevent the tree from fruiting, either through some sort of chemical spray, or by physically knocking the flowers off in the spring. But you would have to be prepared to do that every year, indefinitely . . .

It might be time to look into replacing the tree with a fruitless variety.

Alas, no more spectacular views the rest of the way home, even though my route took me over Sonora Pass.

Green Creek A.M. Mini-Hike #1

Aspens, Clouds, Mountains - Sierra Nevada  2015

Very little sleep during the night. When I finally got up in the morning darkness there were clouds dimly discerned overhead. And it was relatively warm! 61 degrees, no jacket required.

First things first: boil some water for the Starbucks instant coffee with an indeterminate amount of Coffeemate added. Then go for a mini-hike on the East Lake trail.

I didn't get any great photos of Green Creek this time, so I thought I'd post an older photo from 2008.

I had foolishly not taken the tripod (not for what was supposed to be a backpack). Top shot taken at 1/60th second, F7.1 with an Olympus E-M10. Olympus cameras, using a smaller sensor, have a greater depth of field than larger ones.

Green Creek Campground

Campground (Green Creek) - Sierra Nevada  2015

A car camp! I was thinking that if I went north hopefully the smoke would diminish to a more manageable level. At first I was going to go to the Leavitt Meadows campground, but as I drove past Mono Lake I remembered the Green Creek campground.

Hali and I had had an unfortunate bear incident there in 2008, so I was wondering if the campground was now equipped with bear boxes. The ranger station in Bridgeport didn't really have any info, so I decided to chance it.

Yay! Bear boxes! So I set up camp amidst the aspens.
